Waga kado ni
(“Saibara” song from c.1188)

During the Heian period (794-1185), the influence of Chinese culture led to the fusion of regional folk songs with foreign musical instruments, giving birth to a court music genre known as “Saibara.”

This song, dating back to around 1180, portrays a marriage proposal wherein an aristocratic suitor inquires about the name of a young woman gathering greens. The encounter between a man and a woman during spring used to symbolize an occasion that marked the promise of future generations' prosperity.
